With the kick-off of Work Package 2, AMEA steps into its demonstration phase. WP2 is dedicated to testing and validating a robust dual-link architecture, combining SATCOM and VDL Mode 2, across several communication service providers.

What WP2 is about

By deploying Collins Aerospace's Ground-Ground Router and equipping commercial aircraft with FANS C/4D capabilities, the work package aims to demonstrate a seamless, high-performance datalink transition that relieves VDL2 frequency congestion in European airspace.

What comes next

  • The initial demonstration plan was approved by CINEA and the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking in June 2026; the requirements specification and the final demonstration plan are being completed.
  • EASA approval of the new multi-CSP ground infrastructure is expected in early 2027.
  • The live flight demonstration campaign is planned to start in early 2027 and to run until September 2029.

Operational updates will follow as the partners shape the next generation of safe, digital and connected European skies.

AMEA is co-funded by the European Union under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Transport, grant agreement No 101233037), managed by CINEA, and supported by the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking.
